On Sunday, January 27, 2019, New Orleans hosted its 6th annual King Cake Festival in Champion Square at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. The festival began at 10 with a mile long family fun run parade as well as a 4.5 k rep run. The hashtag of the race this year was #EarnDatKingCake. The king cake festival benefited the Ochsner Hospital for Children and the large crowd as well as myself were privileged enough to meet some of the brave children who work with Ochsner. The event proved to not only live up to the high rate of expectations but greatly exceed every single one. The festival was full of great music, wonderful people and even better food. The array of tents held delicious and decadent delicacies to taste. There were over 15 different bakeries that participated in the festival including Cannata’s and Rouses Market.
Although full King Cakes were not available for sale except for the Rouses tent, there were so many different flavors of king cake to try, one would find themselves way too full to think about bringing one home. Among the display of kings cakes, there were even some unique varieties including king cake ice cream! But don’t worry there were more than sugary sweets to divulge in. The array of food trucks offered foods such as etouffee french fries, crepe pizza, and even a king cake burger, I promise it tastes a lot better than it sounds.
Despite the cold breezes and snippy weather, no amount of cold could take away from the creaminess of the king cakes that everyone had come from all over the city to enjoy. The event was overall enjoyable and pleasurable from the very beginning to the very end of the festival. There was never a dull moment nor an empty stomach to be found in Champion Square that day.
