At “Sip n’ Paint,” an event hosted by Nubian Expressions and XU Media, students had the choice of signing up and performing for the audience on the open mic or to paint and listen to the performers while drinking mocktails. This event gave students a chance to express themselves in a public, creative, and artistic manner. These are all things that Nubian Expressions emphasizes, creative expression without fear of ridicule or judgement.
Every student who attended was given a blank canvas, paint brushes, and paint and were free to do whatever they wanted. Some student gathered inspiration from the internet while others drew from the performances. Everything was left to each individuals own interpretation and decisions.
Students had time to hangout and socialize before the many performances of spoken word, poetry, songs, and rap made by several different students. Some told stories and inspired others, while others brought light to issues and problems that people face on a daily basis. The topics ranged from life with depression and anxiety to existing in the world as a black individual all expressed in a free and judgement free zone.
Performers included: Kai Wilson, Grace (Jay) Ehui, Erin Campbell, Kyler Monroe, Mya Caleb, Amaya Sanders, Morgan Harvey, Kierston London, Naomi Winston, SouthsideAli, Isabel Hallock, Ashley Harris, Candace Tukes, Taylor White, Deja Dennis, Clarsey Hawkins.
