Black Girl Magic: A Look At Miss Xavier

Kelsey Marie Green, a Memphis, Tennessee native, is a Biology Pre-Medicine major at Xavier University of Louisiana . She is a proud Member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and plans to pursue a career in Plastic Surgery.

Everyone knows that your city shapes who you are; whether you like it or not. Ms. Green believes that Memphis is a melting pot! She has been able to grow as a leader because she has been surrounded by so many different types of cultures and backgrounds. In Memphis, she was able to experience the fun and excitement of city while also appreciating the rural and beautiful areas of the south.

When stepping on the campus of Xavier, Green knew she wanted to do something impactful. She had a mission to not only excel academically but to contribute her leadership and service to her University. Ms. Green believes she possesses the qualities of a Queen! She wants people, nationally and internationally, to feel the excitement she feels about Xavier. Throughout the few short months of being the 82nd Miss Xavier University of Louisiana, she has interacted with so many people that share the same goals and aspirations she has. Through this, she has learned to better organize and plan her visions.

Ms. Green is not only a pretty face, but she is a strong intelligent black woman, and a servant-leader. She firmly believes in non-profit projects within her community. The “Clean Your Closet Clothing Drive” in which gently used or new clothing items are donated to a local school or summer camp, is one of her service projects, which she plans to continue. Throughout her reign, she also plans to promote mentor/mentee relationships throughout the community.

I asked Ms. Green, “What is black girl magic and what does it mean to you?”

She responded: “Black Girl Magic means the epitome of what a woman of color is. She is a positive role model in which others look up to her for guidance. When she walks into a room, her positive presence is instantly noticed.”

Not only does Green serve within her community, but she is a mentor for young women within NOLA. It is imperative that we support and uplift one another. Black girls and women need to recognize that they are amazing, beautiful individuals. Our self-esteem and empowerment is the force that drives our goals and accomplishments.

Ms. Kelsey Green is making Black Girl Magic look easy honey! I want to be the first one to say that you are definitely showing young women what it means to be a black girl who ROCKS! Continue to share that BLACK GIRL MAGIC because you wear it well!
